Where to Give Birth in Düsseldorf

Congrats! You’re having a baby in Düsseldorf. Besides looking for a midwife you’ll also want to think about where you’d like to give birth early on, so you can choose from all the available options.

In this article, we’ve compiled everything you need to know about where to have your baby in Düsseldorf. Information for this article was provided by Jenna Davis. In Düsseldorf there are five maternity clinics, a birthing center, several "Beleghebammen" (attending midwives) who can assist you at the Uniklinik or Florence Nightingale maternity clinic (Diakonie) as well as midwives who offer home births.

Here are the options and how to register to give birth for each:

  • Evangelisches Krankenhaus Düsseldorf 

  • Sana Kliniken Düsseldorf - Benrath

    • You can visit the delivery room every Sunday at 12pm. Register by phone: +49 211 2800 1247  

    • You can make an appointment to register for giving birth at this hospital by phone +49 211 2800-1247 or e-mail: [email protected]

  • Diakonie/Florence Nightingale Krankenhaus: 

  • Marienhospital

    • Has an international office for English and Russian speaking patients

    • Certified baby-friendly hospital

    • Information sessions take place every first Thursday of the month at 6pm. No need to register in advance.

    • They also offer a tour of the birthing rooms every Sunday at 11am, register by calling 2 hours in advance: (0211) 44 00 – 24 66.

    • Register to give birth at pregnancy week 33 by phone: +49 211 44 00-7303. You can call every day between 12pm and 4 pm.

  • Uniklinik (UKD): 

    • Features an international office for English, Arabic and Russian speaking patients

    • The attending midwife is Simone Mainz

    • Register to give birth here between pregnancy week 30 and 32 (or earlier for a high-risk pregnancy). Call +49 211 81 19830 or +49 211 81 19803 (Monday-Friday, 8am-3pm) to make an appointment.

    • Offers an online information session every first and third Tuesday of the month at 6pm. No need to register in advance.

    • They sometimes offer information sessions in English, although as of June 2024, no specific dates were given.

  • Geburtshaus Düsseldorf

    • Midwife-led birthing center

    • Contact them as early as possible as they have limited capacities

    • Their information sessions are usually on the first Friday of the month at 7.30 pm

      • It is recommended to join before deciding to give birth there.

      • You don’t have to register for it.

    • You will need to pay an on-call fee of €790 (as of July 2024), which may be partially refunded by your public health insurance

    • You can use their online form to register to give birth there

      • In the field "Terminwunsch, Kursname, Kursdatum, Kursort oder weitere Kommentare" please provide information on any previous pregnancies or birth, when you attended or plan to attend their information session, any other important information and the details of your postpartum midwife (if you already have one)

  • Home birth

Depending on where you'd like to give birth, it's important to contact the corresponding midwife as soon as possible to ensure everything goes smoothly.
